Card-O Aeroplane Trading Cards

The Cartophilic Equivalent of the Bermuda Triangle!

A lot of the following information was lifted from The Sport Americana Price Guide To The Non-Sports Cards 1930-1960, by Chris Benjamin and Denny Eckes, the Non-Sports Bible published by Chris Watson, and the article, by Ron Wilson, in The Wrapper #122, published by Les Davis.

Please link to the checklists on the left for more information on specific Series.

All Series - Since the Card-O product was originally designed to be a playing card game (like War), all print runs were set up to produce some multiple, or subset of 54 cards (52 cards plus 2 Jokers), thus subsequent non-game Series are all thought to consist of 27 subjects – printed in sheets of 108 cards. “Plain Text” cards do not have the “Packed with CARD-O CHEWING GUM” notation on the back; “Gum Back” cards do.
U.S. Navy Series 'A' - It is believed that the 5 “Miscellaneous Navy” cards from the Mixed Series were printed at the same time as the 22-card Series ‘A’, to make a total of 27 different cards.
Aeroplanes Series 'B' - The Spitfire card was revised at some point during production. The “QJF” version is a later model. Thus, only 27 different cards were produced in each print run. They are noted as Single Prints (SP) in the Checklist. Joker and Stag back cards are quite scarce. It is believed there are 26 different of each.
Aeroplanes Series 'C' - It is suspected that for every print run of 54 cards, the Lockheed “Electra” and the Republic “Thunderbolt” were only printed once each. Thus producing a total of 27 different cards for the Series. They are noted as Single Prints (SP) in the Checklist. The Miles “Master” is the only “Gum Back” card in this Series that is known at this time. Joker back cards are quite scarce. It is possible there are 28 different.
Aeroplanes Series 'D' - The P-47 “Thunderbolt” card was revised at some point during production. The “Near Wing Down” version is a later model. There are at least 4, and maybe as many as 5 different versions of the “Thunderbolt” card (see Checklist and Table, below). The 27-card print runs probably contained only one version of the P-47. Twenty-three cards in each variety ("Text" and "Gum" backs) note a total of 27 cards in the series; Five cards mention 25 cards. For more on Card-O Series 'D' click here.
Aeroplanes Mixed Series - The “Military Aircraft” and “Aircraft Strategies” cards together make up a print run of 27 cards. If the “Civil Aircraft” cards were 12 instead of 13, that would make up an even print run of 108. It is suspected that the Ryan SC-W was an update to the Ryan ST-A, only one or the other was included in any given print run. They are noted as Single Prints (SP) in the Checklist. See Series ‘A’ (above) for Miscellaneous Navy cards from the ‘Mixed’ Series.
Zoom - The Airplane Card Game - Set 1 - Zoom Set 1 added 10 Axis aircraft to the original 26 cards from Series ‘B’ (without both versions of the XP-42) to make up a 36-card set. There are 2 different sized boxes for this set.
Zoom - The Airplane Card Game - Set 2 - A 36-card set made up of 16 cards from Series ‘C’ and 20 cards from Series ‘D’. Zoom Set 2 also contains a Boulton Paul “Defiant” error card. The left-hand 6 is printed backwards. There are 2 different sized boxes for this set.
